Bio:
My career trajectory was unusual! I wanted to be an elementary school teacher or an art historian but didn’t have the patience to wait for a teaching position or get a PhD and potentially be jobless. So I went to law school. I was an Assistant City Attorney for Royal Oak and worked for a couple local civil firms. I found it difficult with small children and a husband who travelled a lot. Working part-time felt like being a law clerk.
A friend (Cindy Blanchard) mentioned tutoring ESL at OCC and that led to a long career as an International Student Advisor. It was a perfect melding of my interests in education, law, and global issues. It enabled me to participate in NAFSA (National Association of International Educators) on regional and state boards and teach immigration regulations and advocacy to other advisors.
I was married to Ken Schack for 20 years and we had 2 children. Trevor works for University of Michigan Hospital as an anesthesiologist/pain specialist. He and his wife have 3 adorable (of course 😉) children. Eris graduated from School of the Art Institute of Chicago, lives in Brooklyn with her partner and works as a business manager/IT specialist to support her artistic and foodie interests.
I’ve stayed in Michigan now in a small RO 1950’s ranch making it easier to stay in touch with some SHS people who’ve stuck around. However, I have been fortunate to travel. I visited Denmark several times through the years staying with my YFU family. I travelled to Oaxaca for work and spent a lot of time in Colorado. In my first year after retirement, I visited a friend in Ikaria, went to Mexico City, and was at a family wedding in Avignon. I must have known intuitively that COVID was coming and to ignore my 403b balance! Since then, I’ve done a couple of in country trips. I love “Up North”, visiting NYC and have just discovered Albuquerque/Santa Fe. I spend a lot of time hiking and have traded my downhill skis for snowshoes. I do volunteer work, take art classes, go to museums and have produced dozens of watercolors my children won’t want, but I love the process.
Thank you, Wood, not only for the prior reunions and your friendship, but for the remarkable journey of the last 3 years. You continue to bring us together! Cheers to the Class of 1970!
