Bio: As a freshman at UMich, I punched the cards for my first computer program, and I was hooked! I went on to graduate school at MIT, getting a PhD in computer science in 1981. My first faculty position was at Caltech, where I also got married (to a woman I'd met in Boston) and we had our first child. We moved to Pittsburgh, PA in 1984, and I've been on the faculty at Carnegie Mellon University since then. There, I rose through the ranks, serving as Dean of the School of Computer Science from 2004 to 2014, and then returning to regular teaching duties since then. (My 170-student class this term is running online.) I plan to retire this summer, and I look forward to more opportunities to travel and do other stuff. I have three children and three grandchildren. Two of the grandchildren are in Pittsburgh, and it's lots of fun to be with them.
