JUNE 2020 UPDATE

Hello.

THE 2020 REUNION is now only… oh, who am I kidding? I don’t know when it’s going to be.

They say a vaccine might be ready in 12-18 months. And then I read an article about the companies rushing to be the first with a vaccine because of the money to be made, with the clear inference that the first vaccines might not work.  So, we wait until it’s safe.

Birmingham

I walked around Birmingham last night.  Maple Road is a construction site. The restaurants have reopened with social distancing.  They have been given a fee-free summer for their outdoor seating and allowed more space to distance their customers.

The Village Fair is now cancelled.

The park was busy, full of lot’s of people, all whose lives matter.  There was a big demonstration there the other day and a 500-car demonstration from 8 Mile to the Unitarian Church north of Big Beaver.

I was the only one wearing a mask… except for all the restaurant waitstaff who definitely noticed me and, I imagine, sported amazed looks under their masks asking me, “Why would you if you didn’t have to?”

Well, I do because I care.  As well as, if you remember, I was so sick throughout December and January. They now say Covid-19 was in California before my trip there, so I might have contracted it and made it through, but that doesn’t make a bit of difference when there hasn’t been any proven immunity after having it.  I do not ever want to have to go through that again, nor do I want any of you to have to go through it.  So please continue to be careful.

The City notified all residents to use caution at the corner of Merrill and Pierce. Yep, they’re prepping to tear down The Varsity Shop, where I procured my first jock strap and red-nylon bathing suit for Derby, to put up a four-story mixed-use building.

We Persevere

Although we can’t yet determine a new date for the reunion, the facebook group and, thanks to a generous contribution from a classmate, the website will continue on through the reunion.

In addition to the Senior Dinner/Memory record, which you all received via email, the facebook group has posted 50 years-to-the-day memories of J-Hop, Swing-Out, Baccalaureate Service and, as of tomorrow, Commencement.

THE 2020 PIPER is growing slowly but surely and is being enjoyed by many. Please read the BIOS and submit your own.

With tomorrow’s post I have, as the saying goes, “shot my bolt” in terms of Monthly Updates.  I will try to find something interesting to say each month, but please let me know if you have ideas.

An idea has been suggested to make a compilation of crafts and/or hobbies that could be compiled into a movie similar to the movies of the art of Jim Hagen, Peter Gilleran and Joan Gellatly.  Please send me photos if you wish to be included.

THE VIRTUAL 50th ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION

Remember to watch your email tomorrow night, when you will receive the link to the Anniversary Celebration movie, 50 years to the day of our graduation!

We had around 90 classmates who wanted to join in a congratulatory toast to the class. I deeply appreciate your participation.
