MAY 2021 UPDATE

Hello.

A few weeks ago, Diana Davis and I took a walk along some of Birmingham’s trails along the Rouge River. I put together a video from my iPhone. It should probably be called, “Wood and Diana encounter a deer.”

It’s not the prettiest time of year. Fall is my favorite. If you’re in town and want to feel like you’re out of town, here’s a map:

Class of 70 ZOOMs

Last month we held the AFS-YFU photoZOOM to great success. We were joined by Niels Hertel from Denmark and Reidar Thyholdt from Norway. We began at 1am and ended at 3am… their time. Even at two hours, not everyone could share their experiences, but it was a good time sharing and discussing the transformative experience of living abroad at that early age.

Last week we zoomed to discuss How To Bite Your Tongue in Grandparenting 3.0
and enjoyed a great discussion.

Next week: A virtual reunion zoom of the Seaholm 1970 Swim Team.

Jim Everett will captain the discussion. He has been consistently active in the sport as these links below will attest. You should read these links to get up to speed on his notable career:

The 1970 Swim Team photoZOOM
Tuesday, May 18 2021, 7pm eastern

Captained by Jim Everett
The team will be there, wearing virtual speedos.
All are invited to join in.

And in June:
Summer Solstice ZOOM Open House
Monday, June 21 2021, 7pm eastern
Come toast the long-awaited Summer season.
All are invited.

Wait! Who’s skilled at zooming on mobile devices? I think it would be fun if as many of us who can, would join in from waterside; from boats, pools, beaches, lakesides, riversides... open fire hydrants. If you can’t zoom remotely, or can’t attend the zoom, please send me a still photo of you by water, and let me know where the photo was taken.

Think about it, and practice your remote zoom skills now!

Class of 70 READs

Our premier April Bookshelf has generated our first book club group. We are going to read:
The Midnight Library by Matt Haig

The group members are Linda Simpson Platt, Sue Whitall, Wendy Wyatt, Karen Roth and myself. Our initial meeting to get started will be later this month. You are more than welcome to join us, just let me know.

Please reference the April Monthly Update for the other books that were suggested.

CHEERS! A Virtual Celebration 2.0

Please remember that an updated version of our virtual celebration of graduation will be sent out on June 11, 2021. If you want to add your photo or submit a new photo please remember to do so, and do it soon, there’s just a month left.

Arts, Crafts and Hobbies

I’d like to make a similar movie to CHEERS!, but instead of toasting this would be a sharing of our activities;
artwork, crafts, gardening, hobbies, hiking, cooking, sports; anything you love to do. I already have received photos of classmates' paintings, watercolors, quilting, knitting; not enough yet for a movie so please send more.

It’s worth mentioning that links to all our previous THE 2020 REUNION movies are included at our website, on the page: HELPFUL LINKS.

Seaholm!

I had to stop my car and take a photograph of these trees at Wimbledon and Oxford. It’s a corner with three beautiful red Japanese maples. It was only in the viewfinder that I realized the white Dogwood completed the Seaholm reference: Oh Deep Maroon, Oh Snowy White

Jim Hagen was out hiking Hurricane Ridge with his sister, Lynn (’72), on Friday as the weather quickly turned from the thaw and hints of Spring to a swirling mist-veiled snow flurry when this chestnut-backed chickadee suddenly alighted on a nearby fir bough. Channeling Joan Gellatly, he took this:
