NOVEMBER 2020 UPDATE

Hello.

I hope everyone had the best Halloween they could under these Covid circumstances.
At the last minute I feared skipping a year might seriously impair my face painting skills, which are almost non-existent since I only practice once a year.

Birmingham: Maple Road Reconstruction is Complete!

This has a nice overview of the project, but when they start thanking everyone involved you might want to click it off.
The new trees are already wrapped with lights for the Holidays. One surprise: new 'No Left Turn' signs. I’m going to have to learn a new way to navigate the town.

Class of 70 ZOOMS: Two in one month!

This is my first birthday party. We had just moved into Hickory Heights that year. That’s Jim Jones on the left, Gregg Barton, me and I can’t remember the the next two. I think that’s Jeff Jamison on the end.
Thanks to Betsy Westcott, Karen Roth, Barb Gaskill, Mary Lamont, Randy Bryant and my sister Sue; you are all invited to celebrate my birthday this year:

A Future ZOOM on The Social Dilemma

On election night I was awed by the voting results and wondered at how polarized our electorate has become. It reminded me of the Netflix documentary: The Social Dilemma. So I watched it again and got a lot more out of it, as I’m sure I will again the next time I watch it. Learn more at thesocialdilemma.com

What I find noteworthy is that there are political interests at work who want us divided, yes, we are aware of that. But there’s a machine out there, the social network, doing it unintentionally. I think it’s worth a discussion to make us aware of the risks, perhaps suggest precautions we can take, and the effects on our children.

To be clear, what I’m proposing wouldn’t be a political discussion, rather a discussion of the mechanics of polarization. I would love to listen to a panel discussion of classmates that would include a computer expert, a psychologist, a sociologist, and an educator.

If you watch the documentary and think this a ZOOM worth developing, please let me know.

Holiday Music

Randy Bryant is a member of the Bach Choir of Pittsburgh. They have a 7 minute performance of holiday music available on youtube, as well as some other musical performances.

If you are a member of a musical group and have a performance of holiday music you could share with the class, please send me a link to include in next month’s update.

Happy Thanksgiving

Traditional-1956-Thanksgiving-Meal-ModernRetroWomancom-FB.jpeg

Facing Halloween in a pandemic was a tough enough pill to swallow, but here we are, staring down the Holidays with the virus surging out of control. I have wrestled with all the possible scenarios and have come to the conclusion that we really can’t gather together safely.

I have had to actively try to reframe the situation in a way that I can find some comfort. This is the best I could come up with:
This year, there is no better way to say “I love you” … than to stay home.

Call, FaceTime, Zoom everybody. Listen to music. Football. Eat. Watch vintage movies…
Make it a wonderful day for yourself.

Happy Thanksgiving,

Wood

Oh! Remember that little lab Monkey No. A22-1? He sends his love.
